Creating Connections over 20 Years

August 2023 marks our 20-year anniversary here at Star South. Since 2003, Star South has been connecting good people with good prices and wholesome produce. Over the past two decades, we have had the privilege of forging relationships with both fruit producers and retailers, creating a network of trusted partners. Within an ever-changing landscape of seasons, weather patterns, and consumer demand, Star South has remained the steady fixed point by which our partners can safely navigate this industry.


Over the last two decades, we have had many milestone moments, but these have only been possible because of the strong connections we have made. These relationships have shaped us into who we are today and have enabled us to best serve the needs of both our farmers and retailers.


Today we are South Africa’s largest importer of table grapes, stone fruit and kiwi fruit, and our portfolio of produce, sourced and sold globally, is growing all the time. As our product line has grown, our team has grown. It is this human chain of handshakes and hellos that enables the solid relationships we have built between fruit producers and retailers, and it is what makes Star South a leader in our field.


Even as Star South celebrates how far we have come, we keep our eyes steadily on the horizon, constantly innovating and adapting to be ready for the future. We have spent the last twenty years adapting and growing as the landscape around us changes. Sustainable practices and technological advancements reinforce our position as a leading global player.

But it is people who are the foundation of who we are. We know that to continue to grow, we need to invest in the next generation of talent in the fresh produce industry. Our Star South Academy gives candidates the opportunity to enhance their skills, gain valuable work experience, and obtain qualifications through specific programs, giving them exciting career possibilities in this industry.

Our name is inspired by the Southern Cross, that iconic constellation that has helped humankind navigate uncertain landscapes for centuries. As we celebrate 20 years, we have refreshed our brand with new graphic elements – symbols of connection and growth, inspired by our core values.

These new visual elements reflect the dynamic nature of the fresh produce industry and showcase the cycles and patterns of agriculture and the ever-evolving landscape of logistics. They represent the interconnectedness of our operations and the journey we embark on with producers and retailers alike. Star South is committed to being a steady presence, a point of connection, driving progress, and shaping a future filled with opportunities.

Danèl van Deventer

Commercial Manager

Danél started out in the industry in 2010 and has been working her way up ever since. She began in logistics and now serves as a commercial manager, drawing from her in-depth understanding of the cost chain. Danél is passionate about figs and has been dedicated to the export of almost 70% of the South African fig offering for the past seven years.

Jaco is a born entrepreneur and has been trading fruit since the age of 12 when he started his first business. He has experience in all major business areas, including farming, handling, transport, logistics, IT, marketing operations, finance, management, international and domestic affairs. He is fluent in French and also has basic Spanish language skills.
